dsc00899Over the Thanksgiving holiday, I had the chance to sample Rogue Hazelnut Brown Nectar, an American brown ale that I’d read pretty good things about. And it went perfectly with a Bobbie sandwich…turkey leftovers, mashed potatoes, stuffing and cranberry sauce all served on a hard roll.

Poured with a very nice mahogany coloring, releasing a huge biscuity, hazelnut aroma. Not much head, but it didn’t really take away from the beautiful smell.

The taste was even more interesting. Similar to the aroma, loads of nutty malt. As most probably would, I started comparing this to Newcastle Brown Ale, but they aren’t really that similar. This one seemed much more complex. I kept getting nice caramel notes, and maybe even a little honey in there too. There was a nice brown sugar sweetness that came through, but expertly balanced by the mild hoppiness. This one comes in at 6.2% ABV, accentuated by the medium level of carbonation.

If you’re looking for a good American brown ale, this is your beer.
